Lawyer for Academic Integrity Violations

The attorneys at our law firm have handled plagiarism and cheating allegations at public universities through out the Northwest. Academic integrity charges can threaten everything that you (or your son or daughter) have worked so hard for.

Mr. Graham did consulting work to help the student in my family counter a very serious false accusation issue that could have resulted in expulsion. He was always available to talk to, give expert counsel, and reassure us as we went through this 2-month process. His help was appreciated along with his legal knowledge, attention to detail and honest advice. Steve was a positive and firm voice in the settling of the mater. I highly recommend Steve.”

The types of cases that we have handled include:

  • Collaboration by multiple students on projects assigned for individual effort.
  • Copying answers from a classmate during an examination.
  • Plagiarism or failure to properly site sources.
  • Hiring others to complete tests or class assignments.
  • Re-using assignments or projects in multiple classes.

The punishments for such allegations can vary, but typically the punishments are more serious for upperclassmen, or graduate students. Mr. Graham has represented graduate students in business school, law school, medical school, and other professional programs. The punishment or sanction can range from disciplinary probation, an F grade for the class, suspension from school, or expulsion.

Typically, cases are handled in two stages. First, a student has a right to a hearing in front of the student conduct board or academic integrity board. If the student is found guilty or "responsible" next he or she will go to an appeals board for a review of the initial finding. It is usually important for a student to seek the advice of an attorney right away. It is usually helpful for students to inform their parents right away as well.
